Pittsburgh, PA – August 21, 2024 – Fiber optic sensing asset monitoring startup, Sensible Photonics, along with collaborators from University of Pittsburgh and the National Energy Technology Laboratory, announced today that its been awarded the prestigious 2024 R&D 100 Award in the IT/Electrical category for its Ultrasonic Photonics technology. The R&D 100 Awards, sponsored by R&D World Magazine, recognizes the 100 most innovative technologies of the year.

UltraSonic Photonics Technology

UltraSonic Photonics, leverages a combination of ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE), fiber optic sensing, and artificial intelligence for real-time structural health monitoring of energy infrastructure. Through support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Sensible Photonics' team members have collaborated with University of Pittsburgh and the National Energy Technology Laboratory to develop and validate the concept for spent nuclear fuel storage in dry cask storage systems, pipelines, electric power grid assets, and other energy infrastructure. The company has also identified opportunities to expand applications within civil and transportation infrastructure including bridges.

Sensible Photonics to Commercialize Awarded Technology

"Sensible Photonics is proud to partner with the team to bring this important technology to market to impact the future of energy and infrastructure, " said Nick Frank, Sensible Photonics' Chief Commercial Officer. "With nuclear energy gaining momentum for example, the UltraSonic Photonics enabling technology offers a solution for real-time structural health monitoring of spent nuclear fuels and next generation advanced nuclear reactors.  With lead inventors and developers of the technology on our team and our experience with advanced sensor technology commercialization, we are ideally positioned to transition this exciting technology into practical applications.”

About R&D 100

Established in 1963, the R&D 100 Awards is the only S&T (science and technology) awards competition that recognizes new commercial products, technologies and materials for their technological significance that are available for sale or license.

The R&D 100 Awards program identifies and celebrates the top 100 revolutionary technologies of the past year. Past R&D 100 Awards recipients include established Fortune 500 companies and federally funded research institutions, as well as academic and government labs and smaller companies. Their leading products, technologies and services will make a difference in a wide range of industries and together represent a bright future for science and innovation in the years to come. Current and past winners share in the pride of achievement and global recognition that an R&D 100 Award offers.
